The national President of northern women in politics, Hajiya Sa’adatu Abdullahi, has urged women to adopt a new strategy to lobby the National Assembly to reconsider their stance on gender issues they voted against.

Abdullahi, who was speaking at an event organised by the League of Women Voters of Nigeria, (LWVN), said women’s participation in politics is seen in a bad light due to the conduct of some who engage in immoral acts to get relevance in political parties.

She said no law can give power to women to get elected into political offices if they do not have money.

“Money is important in politics in Nigeria because if the party gives you the ticket for free, you need money to finance the campaign.

“The party too needs money so in that process they will give their ticket to the highest bidder.”

She, therefore, urged them to engage in business that would fetch them money before going into politics to avoid reliance on other politicians who might want something in return.

She, however, called on women in elective and appointed positions to do their best to convince lawmakers on the need to ensure women are adequately represented in the parliament.

Speaking, the chairperson of LWVN, Mrs Marie Enegwea, said the decision to deny women special positions showed there was a long way to achieve equity in the country.

“As we all know, women do not only constitute the majority in terms of population, but they also play a vital role in the society as conceivers of future generations. Women are major stakeholders in the development project of any society.

“Globally, women are key contributors in the development of any country.

“However, the issues of women exclusion and low participation in politics and decisionmaking have continued to generate attention worldwide.”
