Ifeoma Ben has called on Nigerians, particularly members of the legal profession, to recommit themselves to the ideals of democracy, accountability, and the rule of law as the nation commemorates Democracy Day 2026. She described the occasion as an important reminder of Nigeria’s democratic journey and the sacrifices made by citizens and leaders in the pursuit of freedom, justice, and representative governance.
In her Democracy Day message, Ben emphasized that the strength of any democracy depends on the independence of institutions, the protection of fundamental rights, and the consistent application of the rule of law. She noted that legal practitioners occupy a strategic position in safeguarding constitutional values, promoting justice, and strengthening democratic governance. The former Assistant Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association Lagos Branch urged lawyers to remain steadfast in their responsibility as guardians of the law and defenders of democratic principles.

Democracy Day 2026
Today, we commemorate Democracy Day, a significant reminder of Nigeria’s democratic journey and the sacrifices made in the pursuit of freedom, justice, and representative governance.
As legal practitioners, Democracy Day presents an opportunity to reflect on the vital role of the rule of law in sustaining democratic institutions. A strong democracy thrives where justice is upheld, rights are protected, and institutions are allowed to function independently and effectively.
As guardians of the law, lawyers have a continuing responsibility to promote justice, defend constitutional values, and contribute to the strengthening of democratic governance in our nation.
As we mark this important day, may we remain committed to the ideals of democracy, accountability, and the rule of law.
