Broadcast stations have been cautioned by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to strictly abide by the Election Act, the broadcast code, and other applicable regulations when covering and reporting on the general elections of 2023.
Balarabe Ilelah, the director general of NBC, urges broadcast stations to carry out their jobs professionally while also revealing that 25 stations received sanctions from NBC for their coverage of the 2023 presidential election, while 16 stations received a final warning.
During a news conference on Wednesday in Abuja, Ilelah announced this in preparation of the March 18 governorship and state assembly elections.
The conference had representatives of some media organisations in attendance.
The NBC boss revealed that one station was sanctioned for broadcasting the results of the election before the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the results which contravene section 5.33 of the NBC code.
He said 17 stations were sanctioned for broadcasting partisan party content after the prescribed 24-hour stoppage time by NBC, while four stations have been sanctioned for divisive comments.
