Former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has alleged that the name of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, is missing from the list of those implicated in retirement fraud within the Nigeria Police Force.
Sowore claimed that a “tsunami” has just hit the Nigeria Police Force, leading to the removal of officers who allegedly prevented the rank and file from progressing.
“A tsunami has just hit PoliceNG. Those who have refused to let the rank and file progress and have perpetrated and perpetuated retirement fraud have been asked to leave the Nigeria Police Force, but IGP Kayode Egbetokun’s name is still missing! #EgbetokunMustGoNOW #RevolutionNow,” he posted on X.
Sowore previously described Egbetokun as an “illegal IGP,” insisting that his tenure elapsed in 2024.
Sowore was recently arrested and arraigned by the Nigeria Police Force over his claim that Egbetokun’s continued stay in office is illegal.
Sowore is currently standing trial before Justice Liman of the Federal High Court, Abuja, for referring to Egbetokun as an “illegal IGP” on his verified X handle.
However, he pleaded not guilty to the cybercrime charges filed against him by the Inspector General of Police. He was granted bail in the sum of N10 million, with one surety in like sum.
Meanwhile, the police have dismissed Sowore’s claims, insisting that Egbetokun’s tenure remains legal.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, described Sowore’s allegations as misleading and aimed at undermining the IGP.
Additionally, the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, defended Egbetokun’s continued stay in office, stating that it is legal.
