Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Governor of Rivers State, has declined to appear before the Judicial Commission of Inquiry established by the Rivers State Government. The commission was tasked with investigating the arson, killings, and property destruction in various local government areas.
Governor Siminalayi Fubara had inaugurated the seven-member panel, chaired by Justice Ibiwengi Minakiri, in October with a one-month mandate to complete its investigation. The panel had specifically reserved Tuesday, November 19, 2024, for Wike to clarify crucial points. Invitations were sent via courier and publicized in newspapers, but the former governor neither appeared nor sent legal representation.
Justice Minakiri expressed disappointment at the absence of Wike and other key figures, such as APC Caretaker Committee Chairman Tony Okocha and former chairmen of Ikwerre, Obio/Akpor, Ahoada West, and Eleme local governments. “Today’s sitting was solely for His Excellency to appear, but there is no strange face here. This marks the conclusion of our sittings,” Minakiri stated.
Despite the absences, the commission has pledged to submit its findings. Justice Minakiri emphasized the importance of the inquiry’s work, stating that the outcome should benefit Rivers State and its citizens.
The panel, established to shed light on the violence that shook the state, will move forward with its report, leaving lingering questions about Wike’s refusal to participate in the investigation.
