Atiku Abubakar, the Presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), visited former President Muhammadu Buhari at his home in Daura, Katsina State, on Saturday. Accompanied by Senator Aminu Tambuwal and other prominent PDP members, Atiku’s visit sparked significant interest.
In a social media post, Atiku explained the purpose of his visit, emphasizing that it was a gesture of respect and a demonstration of his commitment to national unity and dialogue. He underscored the importance of maintaining open channels of communication with leaders from different political backgrounds to foster a more inclusive and harmonious political environment in Nigeria.
“Accompanied by some stakeholders of our great party, the @OfficialPDPNig, we visited the Daura residence of former President Muhammadu Buhari to pay a courtesy call and offer Sallah homage,” Atiku said.
Many people think that Atiku may have used the visit as a calculated attempt to forge connections and garner support in front of the 2027 presidential race. The visit has raised questions about his motives.
It is important to remember that Aminu Tambuwal, the governor of Sokoto State, pulled out of the PDP presidential primary in 2022, just before voting had started. This allowed Atiku Abubakar to take the lead as the party’s presidential nominee.
“I have come to the conclusion – to the glory of God Almighty, seeing millions of Nigerians suffering and the need for us to close ranks in the party and as one of the leaders in this party – I have come to a patriotic conclusion to step down my aspiration,” the former Speaker of the House of Representatives told the gathering.”
“And not only that, I have appealed to my supporters to take this in good strides and for national unity and patriotism – not only that, those who are delegates here – should vote for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.”
