Why Corruption Persists In Nigeria – Obasanjo

Former president Olusegun Obasanjo has said that a society that does not believe in the consequences of bad behaviours will be riddled with corruption.

He stressed that there was corruption at a high level of government because of the lack of free and fair elections.

Obasanjo was speaking at a youth dialogue on the side-line of the presidential youth dialogue and disclosed that there is no country without corruption but there were countries where corruption is not their way of life.

He berated successive leadership in Nigeria for alleged poor handling of the power sector, adding that when he voted president in 1999 and was leaving in 2007, the problems remained to date.

He stated that for youths to become emerging leaders and change the narratives, they must be positively instructive, adding that those at the helm of affairs will not want to leave but the change is imminent.

He reaffirmed that Western liberal democracy is not suitable for the country, noting it is the reason why there is no visible development recorded.

He added that integrity, compassion, and fear of God are part of the attributes that one should look for in leadership.
