1Ls and LL.M. students are invited to a kickoff ceremony to ring in the spring semester.
Inside Sines v. Kessler: A Case Holding White Supremacists Accountable
A panel of experts will join an online webinar to discuss Sines v. Kessler, the federal civil trial and decision that held organizers accountable for violence at the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville on Aug. 11-12, 2017. Participants include plaintiffs Elizabeth Sines ’19, Devin Willis and Marissa Blair; co-lead plaintiffs’ attorney Karen L. Dunn, a partner at Paul Weiss; co-lead plaintiffs’ attorney Roberta Kaplan, a partner at Kaplan, Hecker & Fink; and Deborah Lipstadt, an Emory University history professor who gave expert testimony on antisemitism. UVA Law professor Kim Forde-Mazrui will moderate the panel. The event is part of UVA’s Community MLK Celebration and the Gregory H. Swanson Award will be presented by Dean Risa Goluboff to a student. The session will end with an optional discussion of Winter OGI and employer interactions. An identical session will be held Jan. 28 from 2-3 p.m. Zoom links will be emailed to students.

Crime reporter and novelist Julia Dahl will join Professor Danielle Citron for a discussion about her latest novel “The Missing Hours,” which imagines the extralegal response of a victim of sexual assault and intimate privacy violations. Cybersecurity Beyond the Headlines: A Conversation With Journalist Nicole Perlroth
After the past year’s high-profile cybersecurity incidents, reporter and best-selling author Nicole Perlroth will join Professor Kristen Eichensehr, director of the Law School’s National Security Law Center, for a discussion of ransomware, espionage, the market for zero-day exploits and the role of the U.S. government in the cybersecurity ecosystem.
Perlroth spent a decade as the lead cybersecurity, digital espionage and sabotage reporter for The New York Times. Her investigation and ensuing outing of hacking divisions within China’s People’s Liberation Army helped compel the first U.S. hacking charges against members of the Chinese military, and earned her the Best in Business Award from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers. Her investigation with Azam Ahmed of the use of commercial spyware in Mexico was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. 
Her book “This Is How They Tell Me The World Ends,” about the global cyber arms race, won the 2021 McKinsey and Financial Times’ Business Book of the Year Award. The book and several of her Times articles have been optioned for television. She is a regular lecturer at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and was selected as the inaugural Journalist in Residence for the University of Texas Strauss Center’s Journalism and World Affairs program and the Jeanette Pontacq Investigative Journalism Fellow.
