The Metropolitan Police in the United Kingdom have formally charged a 17-year-old boy with the murder of Nigerian national, John Onetufo, following a fatal stabbing incident in south-east London.
Onetufo, aged 23, was found with multiple stab wounds to the chest on Grove Street, Lewisham, on December 31, 2025. Despite prompt medical intervention, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
In a statement released on January 6, 2026, police confirmed that the teenage suspect was charged on January 5 and will appear before the Bromley Magistrates’ Youth Court. Due to his age, his identity remains withheld in line with UK legal practice.
Detective Chief Inspector Samantha Townsend, who leads the investigation, described the charge as a “significant development” but stressed that inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the offence. She assured the victim’s family of the police’s commitment to securing justice.
Meanwhile, two other individuals earlier arrested in connection with the case have been released on bail. A 23-year-old man was detained on January 2 on suspicion of murder, while an 18-year-old woman was arrested on January 4 on suspicion of perverting the course of justice. Both remain under investigation pending further evidence.
