Two senior judges in Iran’s Supreme Court, Ali Razini and Mohammad Moghiseh, were assassinated in a shooting incident at the court in Tehran on Saturday morning.
According to the judiciary’s news agency, Mizan, a gunman entered the court and opened fire, killing the judges and injuring a bodyguard before taking his own life while attempting to flee the scene.
Judiciary officials have described the attack as a premeditated assassination but are yet to determine the motive. Initial investigations suggest the attacker had no direct connection to any cases handled by the Supreme Court. Authorities are examining whether additional individuals were involved in the plot.
Both judges held prominent positions within Iran’s judiciary for decades and had a history of involvement in cases confirming death sentences. Ali Razini, 71, had previously survived an assassination attempt in 1998. Mohammad Moghiseh, 68, was sanctioned by the European Union, the United States, and Canada for alleged human rights abuses linked to his role in suppressing opposition to the Islamic government since the 1980s.
This assassination underscores escalating tensions in Iran’s judiciary, with the judiciary’s media office vowing to uncover all details surrounding the attack.
