The Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has ordered an immediate investigation into reports of poor feeding conditions at the Afokang Prison in Calabar. The directive came after complaints surfaced regarding the inadequate quality and quantity of food provided to inmates at the facility.
Tunji-Ojo, known for his commitment to prison reforms, emphasized that the welfare of inmates is a top priority under his administration. He stated that any lapses in the provision of basic necessities, including food, would not be tolerated.
The minister’s decision to launch a probe follows increasing concerns from civil society organizations and human rights advocates about the treatment of inmates in Nigerian prisons. The investigation will aim to uncover the root causes of the alleged poor feeding and hold accountable those responsible for any misconduct.
Tunji-Ojo has assured the public that the findings of the investigation will be made transparent, and necessary actions will be taken to rectify the situation. He reiterated the government’s commitment to upholding the rights and dignity of all inmates, in line with international standards.
