The Oyo State Government has launched an investigation into the fatal shooting of a secondary school student by a police officer during a routine traffic enforcement operation on Alakia Old Road, Ibadan, on Tuesday morning. The incident has ignited widespread outrage among residents, who are demanding justice for the young victim.
In a statement issued by Sulaimon Olanrewaju, Special Adviser (Media) to the Oyo State Governor, the government expressed deep sorrow over the “sad, shocking, and painful” event, extending condolences to the bereaved family. The statement described the shooting as “totally avoidable” and provided details of the circumstances leading to the tragedy.
According to the government, the incident occurred around 7:30 a.m. when the father of the deceased, driving a tinted black Honda Accord (registration number FST 639 JU), was flagged for driving against traffic. During an attempt to apprehend the driver, a police officer fired a shot intended for the vehicle’s tire. Tragically, the bullet missed its target and struck the student inside the car, resulting in fatal injuries.
Clarifying circulating rumors, the government refuted claims that the police were pursuing a suspected internet fraudster. Instead, the operation was part of a routine crackdown on traffic violations led by the Oyo State Road Traffic Maintenance Authority (OYRTMA), with police providing backup. The initiative was prompted by frequent one-way traffic violations along Alakia Old Road, which have previously caused fatalities and severe injuries.
The statement highlighted that police support was deemed necessary following recent assaults on OYRTMA officials, including the killing of one official by a traffic offender in Ibadan. The government assured the public that it is working closely with the Oyo State Police Command to thoroughly investigate the incident and ensure accountability for those responsible.
