President Bola Tinubu has established a committee to tackle the country’s food crisis.
Named the Presidential Food Systems Coordination Unit (PFSCU), the committee’s mandate is to devise solutions to the ongoing food crisis and the escalating prices of food items in Nigeria.
The PFSCU will also oversee and coordinate all agricultural activities across the nation.
Vice President Kashim Shettima leads the unit, which includes several state governors, local government representatives, development partners, and other key stakeholders.
Inaugurating the unit on Friday at the State House in Abuja, Shettima expressed concern over Nigeria’s severe food security crisis, emphasizing the urgent need for collective ideas and resources.
He said: “The nation is facing a rare food security crisis and the sooner we come to terms with the reality, the better.”
“Food insecurity endangers the very basis of our democratic experiment and this is why all hands have to be on deck.”
“We are in a food security crisis but it also allows us to re-engineer and reposition the nation on a firmer footing.”
Many Nigerians protested the rising cost of food and other items in the country early this year.
The protests which started in Niger State gradually spread to Ogun, Oyo, and some parts of Lagos State before the governments came up with measures to address the problem and prevent the breakdown of law and order.
