Tinubu Constitutes Committee to Oversee Grid Management Company

President Bola Tinubu has set up an 11-member committee to oversee the operations of the newly approved Grid Asset Management Company Limited (GAMCO).

GAMCO is a Federal Government’s initiative designed to tackle Nigeria’s persistent electricity transmission challenges.

The inauguration, conducted on Friday by the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, followed the Federal Executive Council’s approval of GAMCO earlier in the week.

Gbajabiamila described the move as “one of the revolutionary steps taken by President Tinubu’s administration in the all-important power sector.

He stressed that the committee’s work is central to Tinubu’s vision of optimising power generation and transmission.

“The proposed establishment of GAMCO is one of the revolutionary steps taken by Mr. President and this administration in the all-important power sector. We are here for the inauguration of the Committee on Grid Asset Management Company (GAMCO), which is basically to optimise and revolutionise power generation, and in particular, the grid and transmission sector,” the Chief of Staff said.

The committee will review existing electricity laws, regulations, and policies, while examining the implications of the Electricity Reform Laws (2025) on asset ownership and management.

It will also assess the legal and financial frameworks surrounding the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) and National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) assets, which GAMCO plans to deploy in its pilot phase.

Among its mandates, the committee will evaluate GAMCO’s proposed role alongside the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission, determine fiscal and market implications, and recommend whether legislative amendments are required for the company’s effective operation.

Chaired by Gbajabiamila, the committee includes the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Ministers of Power, Works, Finance, Communication and Digital Economy, Science and Technology, Aviation, and Petroleum (State), as well as the Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service and energy expert, Prof. Yemi Oke.
Dr. John Chidiebere Ezeamama, Permanent Secretary of the Cabinet Affairs Office, will serve as secretary.

Gamecock, to be fully owned by the federal government through the Ministry of Finance Incorporated, will begin operations with a pilot project along the Benin-Lagos transmission corridor. The initiative aims to recover at least 1,600 megawatts from the Omotosho, Olorunsogo, and Ihovbor NIPP plants within 18 to 24 months, supported by the development of a new high-capacity 330KV+ transmission line.
