Time is of essence – Kwankwasiyya movement urges Supreme Court to expedite ruling on ADC case

The Kwankwasiyya Movement has called on the Supreme Court of Nigeria to speed up its ruling in the ongoing case affecting the African Democratic Congress (ADC), warning that delays could affect the party’s ability to fully participate in the country’s democratic process.

In a statement issued on Friday by its spokesperson, Dr. Habibu Sale Mohammed, the movement expressed confidence in the integrity and independence of the apex court, but stressed the need for a timely decision given the urgency of the matter.

“The Kwankwasiyya Movement wishes to address members of the African Democratic Congress, our supporters, and all Nigerians regarding the ongoing proceedings before the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

“While we remain confident in the integrity, independence and sense of responsibility of the Supreme Court, we consider it necessary to respectfully highlight the urgency surrounding this matter,” the statement said.

The group noted that the situation has placed the party under pressure, as electoral processes are guided by strict timelines that cannot be ignored.

“As it stands, the current situation has placed our party in a race against time,” the statement read.

“The absence of a clear and final determination inevitably constrains the ability of the party to fully organise, mobilise and participate effectively within the democratic space.”

The movement urged the court to take into account not only the legal issues involved in the case but also the time-sensitive nature of the situation, especially as it relates to democratic participation and political stability.

“It is our hope that the Supreme Court will consider not only the legal merits of the case but also the urgency of the issues involved,” Mohammed said.

According to the statement, the Supreme Court has, over the years, shown that justice must not only be fair but also delivered on time, particularly in matters that have wider implications for the country.

“The Court has demonstrated that justice, to be truly meaningful, must not only be fair but also timely, particularly in matters with direct implications for democratic participation and national stability,” the statement added.

The Kwankwasiyya Movement said it believes the court will act in a way that protects both the judiciary and Nigeria’s multi-party democracy.

“We are confident that the Supreme Court, in exercising its constitutional mandate, will act in a manner that preserves both the integrity of the judiciary and the vitality of Nigeria’s multiparty democracy,” it said.

The group also appealed to its members and supporters to remain calm and united while the legal process continues.

“To our members and supporters, we urge patience, unity and continued commitment to lawful and democratic engagement. This moment calls for resolve and confidence in the institutions that underpin our democracy,” the statement said.

It reaffirmed its belief that justice would be served in a fair and timely manner.

“The Kwankwasiyya Movement remains assured that justice will prevail, timely, fairly and in the best interest of Nigeria,” the statement concluded.
