“The Baton has Changed Hand” – Badejo-Okusanya, SAN Begins First Day As NBA President

Newly inaugurated President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, FCIArb, has officially commenced her tenure, beginning her first day in office with a transition tour of the NBA National Secretariat.

Badejo-Okusanya, who succeeded Afam Osigwe, SAN, the 32nd President of the NBA, visited NBA House alongside her predecessor, who introduced her to members of staff and took her through the National Secretariat. The transition was followed by a farewell, marking the formal handover of leadership of the Association.

Upon returning to her office, the new NBA President began the administration with prayers before holding an interactive meeting with National Secretariat staff. The engagement focused on translating the administration’s vision into practical action and setting the tone for the new leadership.

Reflecting on her first day, Badejo-Okusanya described the experience as a reminder that leadership extends beyond the formal moment of assuming office. She emphasised that the true measure of leadership lies in how the responsibilities entrusted to a leader are carried forward and transformed into meaningful results for the Association and its members.

THE FIRST DAY

There is something profound about walking through the doors of an institution you have just been entrusted to lead. My first day as President of the Nigerian Bar Association began not with ceremony, but with continuity.

Together with my predecessor, Afam Osigwe, SAN, the 32nd President of the NBA, I toured NBA House, where he took me through the National Secretariat and introduced me to members of staff. Then came the farewell and the quiet realisation that the baton had truly changed hands.

I returned to the office, and we began with prayer. Then, we got to work.

An interactive meeting with the staff of the National Secretariat as we begin translating the vision of this administration into action.

My first day in office reminded me of something I have always believed:

Leadership is not the moment you receive the baton. It is what you do with it after you receive it.
