On Monday, July 8, 2025, the Law Students of Lagos State University (LASU) hosted its highly anticipated Tech Law Conference, where Ifeoma Ben, a respected corporate and technology lawyer and Founding Partner at The Law Suite, delivered a compelling keynote presentation.
Addressing the topic “The Intersection of Technology and Law: Opportunities, Challenges and the Path Forward,” Ms. Ben captivated the audience with a dynamic and insightful talk that explored how the legal profession must adapt to the digital age. Drawing from her personal journey, she shared how her interest in innovation and digital transformation led her to pivot from traditional corporate law into the emerging and impactful field of tech law.
She unpacked the meaning and scope of technology law, touching on areas such as data protection and privacy, cybersecurity, fintech, artificial intelligence, telecom regulation, and intellectual property in the digital era. According to her, these fields present vast career and entrepreneurial opportunities for the modern lawyer, whether as in-house counsel for tech companies, startup legal advisors, cross-border compliance consultants, or legal tech innovators.
While she highlighted the immense potential in tech law, Ms. Ben also provided a sobering view of the challenges. She pointed to the lag in regulatory frameworks compared to the pace of innovation, the complexities of cross-border digital operations, ethical dilemmas in artificial intelligence, and the limited exposure to tech law in many Nigerian legal curricula. She noted that while these challenges are real, they also offer bold young lawyers a chance to lead, shape, and reform the legal landscape.
Her call to action was clear and inspiring. She encouraged the students to embrace tech literacy, pursue self-development through online learning, engage in writing and thought leadership, and seek out hands-on experiences in tech and innovation.
“You are not just future lawyers—you are future architects of digital justice,” she affirmed.
Reflecting on the event, Ms. Ben shared her joy at being able to inspire and mentor the next generation of lawyers. “It was a privilege to engage with such intelligent, forward-thinking students. Mentorship is a responsibility I take seriously and I’m proud to support the next generation of legal innovators,” she said.
With an MBA in Artificial Intelligence from Nexford University USA, Ifeoma Ben is widely known for her work in helping startups and digital businesses build legally protected enterprises. Her presentation at the LASU Tech Law Conference not only broadened the students’ horizons but also reinforced the critical role that lawyers must play in shaping a digitally just future.
The future of law is digital, and as this conference demonstrated, Nigeria’s legal talent is not only aware of this reality, they are preparing to lead it.
