Suspend Pay Rise for Politicians or Risk National Unrest, NLC Tells RMAFC

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has rejected the proposed upward review of salaries and allowances for political office holders by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), warning that the plan could ignite social unrest and deepen inequality across the country.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, condemned the move as “insensitive, unjust, inequitable, and a direct threat to social stability.”

“We are outraged by the decision of RMAFC to embark on a comprehensive upward review of the remuneration packages of political office holders,” Ajaero declared. “This move is insensitive and will only succeed in widening the inequality between civil servants and political office holders.”

Ajaero dismissed the justification provided by RMAFC Chairman, Mohammed Usman, describing it as grossly inadequate. He cautioned that turning public office into a means of personal enrichment rather than public service could “heighten desperation for political positions, with dangerous consequences for governance and stability.”
