Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu has restated the urgency of creating state police, saying Nigeria’s centralized policing structure is no longer effective in tackling insecurity.
Kalu, who spoke in Abuja after returning from the WTO-IPU Parliamentary Conference in Geneva, argued that devolving policing powers would improve response time and align Nigeria with global best practices.
He urged Nigerians to actively participate in the forthcoming national public hearing on the state police bill. On domestic reforms, Kalu rallied support for the Reserved Seats Bill, which seeks to guarantee women’s representation in parliament.
He said excluding women weakens governance and economic growth, pointing out that him and 12 other lawmakers had already sponsored the proposal.
