The Nigerian Senate has passed a groundbreaking bill that mandates national identity registration for all citizens, marking a significant step in reforming the country’s identity management system.
This legislation seeks to repeal and re-enact the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Act, aiming to create a more efficient, inclusive identity system that aligns with global standards. The bill passed after a report from the Senate Committee on National Identity Card and Population, chaired by Senator Victor Umeh, was presented and adopted.
According to Umeh, the proposed law will establish a unified, cost-effective identity system that enhances data accuracy, promotes inclusion, and addresses gaps in Nigeria’s existing identity database. Additionally, it will allow for the creation of a centralised citizen database and ensure the issuance of identity cards to all registered Nigerians.
Sponsored by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, the bill now moves to the House of Representatives for further consideration. If passed, it will be sent to President Bola Tinubu for final approval. Senate President Godswill Akpabio praised the committee and lawmakers for their efforts, expressing hope that the bill will provide a reliable identity system to serve Nigerians for generations to come.
