Return to True Federalism is Timely, Says Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, SAN, as Egbe Amofin O’Odua Holds 2025 National Conference

Legal luminary and former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Lagos Branch, Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, SAN, has extended his heartfelt goodwill to the leadership and members of Egbe Amofin O’Odua on the occasion of their 2025 Annual National Conference. The conference, themed “Regional Justice, Security and Sustainable Development,” brings together distinguished legal minds and thought leaders to examine the imperatives of regional governance and its role in national development.

Akangbe, SAN, lauded the theme as a timely reflection on the federal foundations laid by Nigeria’s independence-era constitutions. He challenged stakeholders to consider a return to constitutional arrangements that empowered regions to develop at their own pace with localized security and responsive governance. Describing Egbe Amofin as the conscience of the bar in the South West, he expressed hope that the conference would reignite national discourse on equitable justice and sustainable progress.

I most respectfully extend my warm felicitations to Aare Abiola Isiaka Olagunju SAN – the Chairman of Egbe Amofin O’Odua, Mr. Olusegun Fabunmi SAN – the Chairman Planning Committee, and all the esteemed members of this noble Egbe Amofin on the occasion of the 2025 National Conference themed “Regional Justice, Security and Sustainable Development.”

This timely theme echoes the visionary structure upon which our founding fathers anchored the 1960 Independence and 1963 Republican Constitutions – true federalism which allowed each region to flourish according to its pace, values, and resources.

As one who shares in the vision and ideals of Egbe Amofin O’Odua, I cannot help but ask: Is it not time to revisit the foundational constitutional arrangements that worked – when regions thrived, security was localised, and governance was responsive?

Egbe Amofin undoubtedly remains the conscience of the bar in the South West and beyond.

May your deliberations reignite the passion for equitable justice and sustainable progress in our land

Warm regards,

LATEEF OMOYEMI AKANGBE, SAN, FCIArb(UK)
Former Chairman NBA Lagos Branch.
