Reps Warn MDAS against Usurping Constitutional-Mandate of the Character Commission

Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Federal Character, Hon. Ahmed Idris Wase, has cautioned some government agencies attempting to usurp or interfere with the constitutional mandate of the Federal Character Commission (FCC), describing such actions as unlawful and unacceptable.

At a session with FCC officials in Abuja, Hon Wase emphasized that no agency created by an Act of Parliament can override the Constitution. He also raised concerns about recruitment irregularities and lopsided appointments in new institutions, stating the Committee has summoned the Minister of Education over the matter.

Acting Chairman of the Federal Character Commission, Hon. Kayode Oladele called for stronger legislative support, citing resistance from some MDAs and state governments. He urged the National Assembly to help strengthen the Commission’s enforcement powers and improve its funding. He however said the FCC, which monitors over 700 MDAs, needs more autonomy to ensure fairness and address growing national concerns over marginalization.
