A civil society group, Centre for Reform and Public Advocacy, has put pressure on the National Judicial Council, NJC, to sanction corrupt judges. The group demanded the NJC to investigate and subsequently sanction judges allegedly being used by politicians to target and silence opposition leaders in Nigeria.
The Centre for Reform and Public Advocacy decried allegations of selective prosecution and intimidation of opposition politicians by the hegemonic All Progressives Congress, APC, government.
The Head of Legal Unit of the Centre, Kalu Agu, in Abuja on Monday, stated that democracy is under threat in Nigeria, saying urgent measures should be taken by all to remedy the situation.
He protested that anti-corruption agencies in the country have refused to prosecute some former governors and ministers of the ruling party indicted for corruption, while those of the opposition are not spared.
The Centre also accused the judiciary of being a tool in the hands of politicians, lamenting that contrary to the plea of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, its cases are still being assigned to some judges at the Federal High Court, accused of doing the biddings of politicians.
The Centre demanded that the judiciary upholds justice and not partisan agenda, enjoining security agencies to act as impartial guardians of the people and not the ruling party.
