President Bola Tinubu has appointed Dr Nkiruka Maduekwe as the interim Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Council on Climate Change, NCCC.
This was contained in a statement signed by Ajuri Ngelale, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity on Sunday.
According to the statement, the appointment awaits confirmation by the Supervisory Council of the NCCC.
The statement added that Dr Maduekwe, 39, will also serve as the Co-Chairperson of the Intergovernmental Committee on the National Carbon Market Activation Plan.
Maduekwe holds a Bachelor of Law degree, a Master’s degree in Environmental Law and Policy from the University of Dundee (UK), and a Doctorate in Law from the University of Hull (UK).
She brings over 15 years of experience in climate policy development and project implementation at both national and international levels.
Previously, she served as Nigeria’s National Coordinator for Climate Parliament and as the legal adviser to the NCCC Director-General.
President Tinubu has also appointed Ibrahim Abdullahi Shelleng, 40, as the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Climate Finance & Stakeholder Engagement.
He will be seconded to the NCCC Secretariat, handling matters related to climate finance and stakeholder relations. Shelleng will also serve as the Secretary of the Intergovernmental Committee on the National Carbon Market Activation Plan and as a member of both the Presidential Committee on Climate Action and Green Economic Solutions and the Presidential Steering Committee on Project Evergreen.
He holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and has held senior roles in various financial institutions.
Olamide Fagbuji, 44, has been appointed as the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Climate Technology and Operations.
He will be seconded to the NCCC Secretariat to oversee the digitalization of the procurement process and optimize cross-departmental procedures.
Fagbuji previously served as Special Assistant to the President on Economic Matters and as the Technical Adviser to the Director-General of the NCCC on Policy Research and Strategy. He is an experienced policy analyst and computer scientist.
“The President expects the new appointees to bring their expertise and discipline to bear in these very important assignments in pursuance of the nation’s aspiration on green industrial development and climate action for sustainable growth and national prosperity,” the statement added.
The appointments take immediate effect.
