Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s dedication to eliminating criminal elements that threaten the peace and security of the country.
Egbetokun made this statement after formally handing over the rescued medical students from the Universities of Jos and Maiduguri to their respective Vice Chancellors in Abuja on Sunday. These students had been abducted in Benue State a week earlier.
The IGP assured Nigerians and all residents that the police force remains vigilant, proactive, and committed to ensuring a safer Nigeria, where the safety of individuals is a top priority.
He emphasized that the force will not rest until every citizen and resident can live without fear or intimidation.
The Vice Chancellors of the Universities of Jos and Maiduguri, along with the parents of the victims and the Benue State government, expressed their gratitude to the police and other security agencies for the successful rescue operation.
The medical students, 16 males and 4 females, were abducted on August 15, 2024, while traveling to a conference in Enugu. Seven others who were also kidnapped during the incident were freed as well.
The rescue operation, coordinated by the office of the National Security Adviser, involved the police, DSS, military personnel, and equipment, with the support of the Benue State government.
“We remain resolute in our commitment to rid our nation of criminal elements who seek to disrupt the peace and security of society,”
“The Nigerian Police Force will continue to employ every lawful means at its disposal to protect the lives and properties of all Nigerians.” Egbetokun said.
