Police Launches Forensic Probe into Fatal Shooting in Osogbo

The Nigeria Police Force has commenced a forensic investigation into the incident that led to the death of a resident in Osogbo on Sunday.

The police said the probe followed growing public interest in the shooting, which occurred in the Dada Estate area of the city.

According to the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, the force acknowledged the call by the Nigeria Customs Service for a harmonised investigation into the incident.

Disu said the inquiry would be conducted with strict adherence to professional and forensic standards.

“To this end, the NPF assures our sister agency and the public that the investigation, currently led by the Osun State Criminal Investigation Department, will be conducted with the highest level of forensic diligence,” he said.

In a statement, the Force Public Relations Officer, Okon Placid, said the police recognised the statutory duties of the Nigeria Customs Service in anti-smuggling operations but emphasised that the protection of human life remains paramount.

“The Nigeria Police Force acknowledges the ongoing public interest and the recent statement by the Nigeria Customs Service regarding the unfortunate shooting incident in the Dada Estate area of Osogbo, Osun State, which resulted in the loss of a citizen’s life,” he said.

Placid added that while the NCS carries out legitimate anti-smuggling responsibilities, the sanctity of human life remains the highest priority of the state.

The police also confirmed that two suspects, Kolawole Suuti and Danjuma Samuel, remain in custody to assist investigators.

Recovered exhibits, including a Beretta pistol with Breech Number 125024 and 9mm ballistic evidence, are currently undergoing specialised forensic analysis to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine compliance with the operational Rules of Engagement.

Placid said, “The NPF and NCS maintain a robust, professional relationship. This incident is being treated as a matter of individual professional accountability.”

He urged the public to refrain from sensationalizing the event as a conflict between agencies.

“Both the NPF and NCS are united in the pursuit of justice for the deceased.

“The Force extends its deepest condolences to the family of the victim and remains committed to a conclusion that upholds the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he added.
