The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the recent renaming of streets across several local government areas, calling the move unconstitutional, divisive, and a threat to the state’s multicultural identity.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the PDP Vice Chairman for Lagos Central, Hakeem Olalemi, urged the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to reverse the decision, warning that it could deepen social tensions and undermine the unity of Lagos.
Olalemi argued that many of the renamed streets had names of historical significance, particularly those bearing Igbo heritage, and accused some local council chairmen of targeting specific ethnic groups.
“The Lagos PDP hereby totally rejects the renaming of streets by some council chairmen. We must not erase history for political reasons. This move contradicts the spirit of unity in diversity and damages Lagos’ image as a cosmopolitan state,” Olalemi stated.
He further criticized the process, alleging that there was little or no public consultation before implementing the name changes. He warned that the party would consider legal action if the original street names were not restored.
“The ruling party should understand that arbitrary street renaming can provoke unrest and serious public disorder,” he added.
The controversy has already sparked protests in some areas, including in Bariga’s Ilaje community, where residents opposed the renaming of Ilaje Road to King Sunny Ade Road.
Prominent human rights lawyer Femi Falana has also spoken out against the renaming exercise, labelling it unconstitutional.
