The Oyo State House of Assembly has announced its intention to repeal the law establishing the First Technical University, Ibadan, following the recent change in the name of the university by Governor Seyi Makinde to Abiola Ajimobi First Technical University, Ibadan.
The decision to repeal the law was revealed in a letter from Governor Seyi Makinde, which was read at the plenary session on Tuesday by the Speaker, Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin. The house stated that the repeal is necessary to align with the new name of the university as approved by the governor.
The move to repeal the law underscores the governor’s commitment to honoring the former governor of the state, the late Abiola Ajimobi, by renaming the university after him. It also highlights the legislative process required to effect such changes in the state’s laws.
The letter reads;
”This administration has observed the need to repeal the First Technical University, Ibadan, Oyo State Law, 2021 and enact a new law to reflect the University’s well deserved renaming from First Technical University, Ibadan to Abiola Ajimobi First Technical University, Ibadan. This is also to ensure its governance structures are in line with other State owned Institutions.”
Recall that the First Technical University, Ibadan was established by late Governor Abiola Ajimobi in 2017.
