The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) at the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo State, has accused the institution’s management of financial irresponsibility, leading to a standoff between the union and administration.
SSANU alleges that over ₦65 million has been earmarked for the university’s 10th-anniversary celebrations, a move they deem “insensitive” given unresolved staff welfare issues. These include 12 months of unpaid pension remittances, 18 months of January 2023 wage award arrears, and a staggering 105 months of Responsibility Allowance arrears.
Speaking after a congress meeting, SSANU Chairman, Comrade Oluwaseyi Abayomi, criticized the expenditure amid Nigeria’s economic struggles. “Spending ₦65 million on a mere anniversary while staff are owed months of entitlements is unacceptable. Management must reverse this decision and focus on settling staff dues,” he stated.
The union presented key demands, including:
•Immediate remittance of pension arrears.
•Payment of 57 months of minimum wage consequential adjustment.
•Implementation of the Orange Health Insurance Policy.
•Increased funding for staff training and development.
SSANU further directed members to boycott anniversary activities until their grievances are addressed.
