Ogun Police Plans Arrest, Prosecution of TikToker Mirabel Over Alleged False Rape Claim

The Ogun State Police Command has concluded plans to arrest and prosecute a female TikTok user identified as Mirabel after she allegedly admitted that her viral claim of being raped was false.

Mirabel reportedly made the admission during a phone conversation with social media personality Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM). An audio recording of the exchange, shared online by VDM and obtained by Magic FM Aba on Thursday, captured Mirabel conceding that parts of her initial account were untrue.

In the recording, she was heard apologising profusely, saying, “Yes, sir, please help me, I am very sorry,” after being confronted with messages she had previously claimed were from her alleged attacker. She also acknowledged creating a threatening TikTok account herself to support her narrative and attributed her actions to drug use, stating she “was not thinking clearly” when posting the videos.

A police source, speaking anonymously as he was not authorised to address the media, revealed that a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and other senior officers were present at the hospital where Mirabel is currently receiving treatment. The source said she would be taken into custody upon discharge and charged accordingly.

“The DPO and some senior police officers are currently at the hospital where she is admitted. Once she is discharged, she will be taken into custody, and a charge will be prepared against her for trial. The essence is to serve as a deterrent to others,” the source stated.

Mirabel had initially alleged on TikTok that a stranger forcibly entered her apartment in the Ogijo area of Ogun State, attacked and raped her. The post generated significant public outrage, with widespread calls for action against sexual violence and the trending hashtag #StopRapingWomen.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the command’s spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, said the Commissioner of Police directed the DPO of Ibafo Division to contact Mirabel immediately after the report surfaced. She voluntarily reported to Ibafo Police Station, where initial details were obtained. Preliminary findings indicated the alleged incident fell under Ogijo jurisdiction.

Odutola added that Mirabel was escorted to a medical facility for assessment and treatment due to her condition, later referred for further care to support both her recovery and the investigation.

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency had earlier contacted a close friend of Mirabel, who confirmed her hospital discharge, but clarified the incident occurred in Ogun State, outside its jurisdiction, and forwarded relevant details to the appropriate authorities.

When contacted on Thursday for an update on the latest developments, the police spokesperson indicated that the command was still reviewing the matter and would provide an official statement in due course.

The case has sparked intense online debate, with some calling for strict penalties to deter false allegations that undermine genuine victims of sexual violence, while others highlight the need for mental health support given Mirabel’s reported struggles with substance use and self-harm. Investigations remain ongoing.
