The Nigerian Revenue Service (NRS) has inaugurated a curriculum review committee to strengthen taxation education in Nigerian institutions.
The committee was inaugurated on February 24 at the NRS Academy in Durumi, Abuja, to support the development of a modern tax administration system.
Speaking during the inauguration, Adeolu Akinyemi, director of the academy, said the initiative aims at ensuring that academic training in taxation reflects the evolving needs of modern tax administration.
Akinyemi added that the academy plans to collaborate with the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) to develop a well-structured curriculum for the academy and improve taxation education in Nigeria.
He said the committee has been mandated to review existing taxation curricula in Nigerian educational institutions and recommend improvements that incorporate contemporary tax policies, recent legislative developments, and emerging areas such as digital taxation and global tax practices.
According to him, the initiative also seeks to bridge the gap between academic learning and practical tax administration by aligning theoretical knowledge with the operational realities of tax administration.
“This will ensure that graduates are equipped with the knowledge and skills required to support Nigeria’s tax system,” he said.
He added that the initiative is expected to strengthen tax awareness, promote voluntary compliance, and contribute to the development of skilled tax professionals who will support national revenue growth and broader economic development.
The committee is chaired by Aisha Hamman, the special adviser on research and statistics. to Zacch Adedeji, chairman of the NRS.
Members of the committee include representatives of the service, academic experts in taxation and fiscal policy, as well as professionals with experience in tax administration, policy development, and tax education.
The committee will also work with relevant education regulatory bodies and professional institutions to ensure that the revised curriculum meets national academic standards while addressing the practical needs of tax administration in Nigeria.
The service said the review exercise is expected to be completed within 60 days, after which updates will be provided on the progress and implementation of the revised curriculum.
