The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has condemned the endorsement by 180 lawmakers for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
The CNG described this move as treacherous and an affront to the victims of terrorism attacks in Nigeria. They believe it undermines the efforts to combat terrorism and offers support to those causing unrest in the country.
In a statement issued by its National Coordinator, Jamiu Charanchi, the CNG recalled their 2017 report to the UN advocating for Kanu’s group to be designated as a terrorist organization. This designation was later declared by the Nigerian government in 2021.
The CNG rejected this legislative move and questioned the motives of the lawmakers, particularly those from Northern Nigeria. They commended Hon. Aminu Jamo for his courageous stand against the endorsement and called on Nigerians to rise up against terrorism and those who enable it.
The body vowed to ensure that the blood of their loved ones is not in vain and that terrorism does not prevail.
