Detained leader of proscribed Igbo separatist group, the Indigenous People of Biafra, (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has petitioned the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), seeking sanctions against Justices Binta Nyako, Haruna Tsammani, and Garba Lawal, the three judges who have handled his alleged treason case since his arrest in 2021.
In the petition he personally signed and sent to the NBA ahead of their national conference in Enugu, Kanu accused the three judges of gross judicial misconduct and miscarriage of justice in his trial.
In the strongly-worded petition seen by Ripples Nigeria on Sunday, Kanu, urged the NBA to sanction the judges and publish the report so that no Nigerian should ever again be abducted or tried under a repealed law.
He further called on the NBA to restore confidence in the judiciary by holding errant judges accountable to serve as a deterrent to others.
The IPOB leader chronicled the alleged offenses of the judges against him and called on the NBA to investigate them and take appropriate measures against them.
“The catalogue of infractions by these judges now stands as an un-erasable blot on Nigeria’s legal conscience,” Kanu wrote
“I call on the NBA to publish a report condemning the use of civil procedures to subvert criminal law, and the resurrection of repealed statutes; affirm that no Nigerian should ever again be detained by abduction or tried under a repealed law; and to hold errant judges accountable, restoring public confidence in the Bar and Bench,” he added.
