The National Judicial Council (NJC) has dismissed recent media reports alleging that the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Hon. Justice Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun, ordered the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), and his repatriation to Kenya.
In an official statement issued by Kemi Babalola Ogedengbe, Esq., Deputy Director of Information, the NJC labeled the reports as a “figment of the writer’s imagination” and confirmed that there have been no court proceedings, judgments, or decisions that involved such a directive from the CJN.
The Council further clarified that Justice Kekere-Ekun did not preside over any case involving Kanu, especially not concerning jurisdictional issues, nor made any pronouncement regarding his release.
Additionally, the NJC strongly refuted claims suggesting that the CJN had written a formal apology letter to the Kenyan Government or High Commission regarding Kanu’s arrest and trial.
The NJC urged the public to disregard the false reports and warned against the spread of misinformation in judicial matters.
