To allow more Nigerians to link their National Identification Number (NIN) to their Subscriber Identity Module (SIM), the federal government has approved a further extension of the deadline for the exercise to March 31, 2022.
This is as the government has said that the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has issued over 71 million NINs as of December 30, 2021, with more than 14,000 enrolment centres set up across the country.
The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Mr Isa Pantami, explained that the extension is to enable the federal government to consolidate the gains of the process and accelerate the enrolment of Nigerians in key areas like the remote areas, diaspora, schools, hospitals, worship centres, and the registration of legal residents.
The disclosure, contained in a press statement jointly issued and signed by NCC’s Director, Public Affairs, Mr Ikechukwu Adinde, and Head, Corporate Communications, NIMC, Mr Kayode Adegoke, on December 31, 2021, stated that NIMC has also set up enrolment centres in over 31 countries to cater for Nigerians in the Diaspora.
It also stated that the stakeholders praised the federal government for the significant growth in the number of NIN enrolments and the increased drive to enlighten Nigerians and legal residents across the country.
The statement partly reads, “The Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Ali Ibrahim (Pantami) FBCS, FNCS, FIIM, wishes to convey the approval of the Federal Government to further extend the deadline for the National Identification Number (NIN)-Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) data verification to the 31st of March, 2022.
‘’As of 30th December 2021, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has issued over seventy-one million (71m) NINs with over fourteen-thousand (14,000) enrolment centres set up across the country.
‘’Furthermore, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has also set up enrolment centres in over thirty-one (31) countries to cater for Nigerians in the Diaspora. The unprecedented growth in the National Identity Database to over 71 million unique NINs in such a short period, with about 3 to 4 SIMs linked to a NIN, reflects the concerted effort of the Federal Government, the Nigerian populace and legal residents and this is truly commendable.
‘’Following the request by stakeholders, including citizens, legal residents and Nigerians in the diaspora, the Federal Government has extended the deadline of the exercise to the 31st of March, 2022. This extension would enable the Federal Government to consolidate the gains of the process and accelerate the enrolment of Nigerians in key areas like the remote areas, diaspora, schools, hospitals, worship centres, and the registration of legal residents.
‘’The Honourable Minister has however implored Nigerians and legal residents to enrol for their NINs and link with their SIMs during this period of extension as more services will be requiring the NIN for identification. He also reiterated the commitment of the Federal Government to support the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) in ensuring that the objectives of the exercise are achieved.’’

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to revive a 215 Megawatts Power Project in Kaduna State.
This was disclosed by the Minister of Power, Mr Abubakar Aliyu, after inspecting the project on Tuesday at Kudenda in Kaduna South Local Government Area of the state.
He said the project initiated in 2012 had reached about 80 per cent completion stage before being abandoned, adding that when revived, it would boost power generation in the country.
The Minister said that the four companies handling the project would soon resume work to fast track its completion.
According to him, the ministry is also in partnership with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) for the supply of diesel to power the plant on a temporary basis before connecting it to Kaduna Gas Pipeline.
“We started interfacing with the NNPC to see how we can key into this project.
“In the meantime, as long as the project is not completed, it will go on diesel supply before the connection of gas, it will serve as dual,” he said.
Speaking further, the Minister attributed the deterioration of some power projects to negligence by the previous administrations, noting that proactive measures had been adopted to reinvigorate moribund power plants across the country.
Mr Aliyu said the country would witness a significant increase in electricity supply considering that only two system collapses were recorded in 2021 as against over 10 in the preceding years.
“We have done a lot; as we are witnessing the stability we are enjoying now, people are thinking we are having 5,000 megawatts for a very long time,” he said.

Youth leaders in the Niger Delta on Sunday applauded President Muhammadu Buhari for vowing to rid the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) of the moral and political rot that has plagued it for so long.
“We are continually inspired by Buhari’s dedication and vision to addressing development issues in the Niger Delta region,” the youths said at a meeting in Warri, Delta State.
The President promised to go after those indicted in the forensic audit of the NDDC and the youths from the region expressed gratitude to Mr Buhari for “every sincere effort made to achieve development in the Niger Delta region.”
They commended him for ordering the release of outstanding NDDC funds and trial of corrupt officials, noting that this creates the momentum which can accelerate progress in the region.
“The President’s directive on the completion of all viable projects, which have been abandoned by the NDDC, is a welcome development,” the chairman of the Niger Delta Progressives Movement (NDPM), Mr Julius Ita, told a news conference after the gathering in Warri.
Specifically, the youths commended Mr Godswill Akpabio for breathing life into the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, revitalizing the region, instilling a renewed sense of faith and hope and creating a wonderful legacy for Niger Delta’s future.
“Chief Godswill Akpabio represents an extraordinary example of the spirit we honour in the region,” the group said.
The youth leaders described the remarks of the National Chairman of Niger Delta People’s Forum (NDPF), Mr Boma Ebiakpo as “negative and divisive”.
“It won’t distract or deter the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio from his focus on developing the Niger Delta region”, said the youth leaders.
The youth leaders said they expected Mr Ebiakpo and his sponsors to cherish Mr Akpabio’s contribution, wisdom and energy to the realization of the Niger Delta dream.
“An NDDC board in the first half-year period will be a distraction”, the youth leaders pointed out.

The Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu has said the blue and red line rail projects across the state would be supervised every quarter until it is completed in the fourth quarter of 2022.
The governor gave this assurance during an inspection tour of the projects at Ikeja, Yaba, Ebute Metta, and Marina Stations yesterday.
Mr Sanwo-Olu expressed satisfaction with the pace of work at the stations, noting that the contractors were on course and hoped that they would round up this year, promising to intensify supervision and monitoring of the projects quarterly to facilitate speedy completion.
“Our promise on the blue and the red line is still on course. We believe that, by coming on a quarterly basis to supervise them, we would ensure that before the end of this year, we will see the trains on top of the tracks. That is our commitment and we will begin to monitor and check ourselves.
“It is a very iconic and landmark project that we are truly proud of. On behalf of the government, I want to commend all of our contractors because they are very committed. They have assured us that whatever it takes, they will complete all of the projects on schedule and on budget,” the governor said.
“We embarked on this similar tour about three or four months ago and we did mention that we would be doing it every quarter so that we can see how far the constructions are going.
“As we all have seen, I am happy to report that the construction is going on according to schedule. All the contractors are here even today not being a working day, they are all on-site working,” the governor told journalists who were with him during the tour to the four stations.
The Red and Blue line rail is part of the intermodal transportation system of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration in reducing gridlock and ensuring interconnectivity in different parts of the state.
When completed, the 37 kilometres Red Line Rail Project will link Agbado to Marina, while the 27.5 kilometres Blue line Rail Project will run from Okokomaiko to Marina.
Governor Sanwo-Olu also disclosed the plan by the State Government to relocate the market around the train station at Yaba as the government is engaging the concerned stakeholders on how best to relocate traders to another place.
