Nigerian Man Arrested For Heroin Trafficking In India

Chandigarh police in India have arrested a Nigerian man identified simply as Benjamin, after he was caught with 274 grams of heroin on Thursday, 11 August.

The Hindustan Times reported that the 25-year-old Benjamin was arrested at a check post in Industrial Area, Phase-2, Chandigarh on Thursday by the Operations Cell under the supervision of DSP Jasbir Singh.

Police said the team was on patrolling duty when they spotted the suspect.

He was then charged under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at the sector-31 police station and presented before a court on Friday, August 12.

Mr Benjamin will remain in police custody till August 16, and security officials will question him regarding the source and destination of the drugs and others involved.

The police said Benjamin resided in Tilak Nagar, Delhi and had come to India on a business visa in December 2020.

Mr Benjamin’s arrest came weeks after two Nigerians were arrested over drug possession.

In July 2022, the Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) of Pune Police arrested two Nigerians identified as Ogochukwu Emmanuel and Enebeli Omamma Vivian over possession of 644 grams of mephedrone and 201 grams of cocaine.
