NEFGAD Urges Tinubu, NASS To Probe Unlawful Alterations of Tax Laws

The Network for the Actualization of Social Growth and Viable Development (NEFGAD) has formally written to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the National Assembly, demanding an immediate investigation into the confirmed unlawful alterations of Nigeria’s newly gazetted tax laws.

In a letter signed by NEFGAD’s acting head, Barr. Blessing Nnekwu Ojo, and addressed to the president and the National Assembly leadership on Monday, the civic advocacy group expressed grave concern over changes made to the tax laws after they were duly passed and assented to by the president.

NEFGAD described the development as a direct assault on constitutional order, legislative integrity, and democratic governance.

The group urged President Tinubu to order an independent investigation to identify where the integrity of the legislative process was compromised, determine the scope of the alterations, and apply sanctions to all individuals, offices, or agencies involved, in accordance with the Constitution and extant Nigerian laws.

According to NEFGAD, “a law passed by the National Assembly represents the final and authoritative expression of legislative intent. Any alteration, whether by omission, substitution, or addition, amounts to a fundamental breach of due process, public trust, and the rule of law.” The group further warned that such actions undermine the separation of powers, threaten fiscal certainty, erode investor confidence, and risk the country’s international reputation.

NEFGAD also cautioned that failure to take prompt corrective action could compel the organization to seek judicial redress, including filing proceedings before the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice, citing concerns over legislative impunity and institutional abuse.

“This matter is not merely administrative; it is constitutional and existential to Nigeria’s democracy. The nation expects decisive action, transparency, and accountability,” the group stated.

The advocacy group reaffirmed its commitment to defending democratic institutions, upholding the rule of law, and ensuring that Nigeria’s governance processes remain credible, lawful, and transparent.
