The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has declared all correctional centres across the country as “Red Zones” ahead of the planned nationwide protest calling for the release of Nnamdi Kanu on Monday, October 20, 2025.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the Service’s Public Relations Officer, Umar Abubakar, the NCoS cautioned that all correctional facilities remain restricted areas and warned the public to steer clear to avoid security breaches or other incidents.
“The Nigerian Correctional Service wishes to inform the general public that all correctional centres nationwide are designated as no-protest zones. These facilities are highly restricted areas, and any attempt to breach security around them will not be tolerated,” the statement read in part.
Abubakar urged citizens to exercise caution and cooperate with security agencies to maintain peace and public order during the demonstrations. He stressed that respecting restricted zones, particularly correctional centres, is essential to avoiding unnecessary confrontations with law enforcement.
The statement comes amid heightened security measures across several states as authorities prepare for the pro-Kanu protests being organized by groups demanding the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
