The Chairmen of the eight branches of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Rivers State have strongly condemned the recent resolution passed by the Rivers State House of Assembly directing the Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate the Chief Judge of Rivers State over allegations of age falsification.
In a statement released on Saturday, the NBA leaders described the development as unfortunate, particularly given the already tense political climate in the state. They cautioned against further escalation of tensions, emphasizing the need for mutual respect among the three arms of government to ensure peace, stability, and progress in Rivers State.
The statement acknowledged the existing political conflict between the Executive and Legislative arms but warned that the Judiciary must not be drawn into the dispute for unjustified reasons. The NBA leaders reaffirmed the Judiciary’s independence, stating that it plays a crucial role in maintaining stability by resolving disputes, as seen in recent Supreme Court rulings.
Referencing the judicial crisis of 2014–2015, which led to the closure of courts in the state, the statement warned against a repeat of such disruptions. The NBA insisted that due process must be followed in addressing any allegations against judicial officers, noting that only the National Judicial Council (NJC) has the constitutional authority to investigate and discipline judges.
The statement further called on security agencies to respect the rule of law and refrain from actions that could be seen as intimidation or political interference in judicial affairs.
The NBA leaders urged all stakeholders to prioritize the stability of Rivers State and the interests of its citizens by seeking peaceful resolutions to the ongoing political conflict. They reaffirmed their commitment to defending the Judiciary from undue political pressure and reiterated that the Judiciary remains the last hope for justice for all Nigerians, including politicians.
