One of the Presidential Candidates in the forthcoming NBA Election, Tobenna Erojikwe took the floor during the town hall meeting, introducing himself and promptly delving into his concerns and observations within the NBA.
He spoke eloquently during the 5th session at the 2024 Law Week organised by the Nigerian Bar Association, Lagos Branch on the topic “Town Hall – The Future of the NBA”.
In his speech, he emphasized the importance of experienced lawyers mentoring and supporting younger counterparts who may lack resources or opportunities. Tobenna stressed the need for grooming and developing the next generation of legal professionals.
Tobenna also identified key issues plaguing the NBA, he highlighted the dysfunctional nature of the NBA secretariat and the lack of donor partnerships. He also lamented the erosion of trust in the justice system, exemplified by the targeting of legal institutions during the End SARS protests, and the longstanding neglect of minimum wage concerns for lawyers.
Responding to a question about conference fees, Tobenna acknowledged the necessity of a fee review due to economic realities but expressed concern over the drastic increase, citing the potential exclusion of lawyers unable to afford the new rates.
Addressing violations of the Rules of Professional Conduct (RPC), Tobenna advocated for disciplinary action and urged lawyers to familiarize themselves with updated regulations. He pledged to encourage reporting of breaches and spoke against impunity within the legal profession.
Tobenna took a firm stance against sexual harassment, urging victims to speak out and promising swift action if elected as NBA president.
Concluding the session, Tobenna appealed for civility and respect among supporters of candidates in the upcoming elections, emphasizing the bond shared by all candidates.
Tobenna Erojikwe’s contributions underscored a commitment to reform, mentorship, and upholding professional ethics within the NBA, offering a vision for a more inclusive and accountable legal community.
