NBA Lagos Branch 2024 Bar Dinner: A Celebration of Excellence and Achievement

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Lagos Branch, hosted its highly anticipated 2024 Annual Bar Dinner, themed “Eko for Show – Culture of Excellence.” The event, held on December 7th 2024, was a celebration of the branch’s commitment to professionalism, cultural heritage, and the notable strides made under the current administration.

In his welcome address, the Chairman of the Lagos Branch, Olabisi Makanjuola expressed profound gratitude to members and guests for their presence. He reflected on the achievements of his administration since assuming office on July 28, 2023, emphasizing the unwavering support of the Executive Committee and branch members in driving progress.

“This evening marks not just the culmination of a successful year but also the second and final dinner of my administration,” he remarked. “Together, we have worked tirelessly to elevate the standards of this great branch, and tonight is a celebration of our shared journey” he said.

Progress and Milestones
The Chairman highlighted the branch’s achievements over the past 17 months, outlining key initiatives aimed at enhancing member welfare, professional development, and institutional growth.

1. Strategic Partnerships:
The branch prioritized collaborations that deliver tangible benefits to members. A notable example is the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding with Uber, which provides discounted ride-hailing services to members, easing transportation costs.

2. International Secondment Program:
In a groundbreaking move, the branch initiated an international secondment program, allowing members to gain invaluable experience with UK-based law firms. Ten members have been shortlisted, with placements scheduled to commence in early 2025.

3. Development of a World-Class Bar Centre:
The dream of establishing a state-of-the-art Bar Centre is steadily becoming a reality. Significant progress was made through robust fundraising efforts, including a ₦50 million pledge secured during the 2023 Elders’ Night.

4. Welfare Initiatives:
Member welfare has remained a top priority. From financial assistance programs to free medical checkups and wellness initiatives, the administration has consistently addressed the needs of its members.

5. Advocacy for Human Rights:
Through the branch’s Human Rights Committee, several impactful initiatives have been executed, including police station inspections and pro bono legal services for indigent citizens. Plans are underway for a Human Rights Day Conference on December 10, 2024, themed “Human Rights in Crisis: Addressing the Challenges Facing Nigeria.”

6. Record-Breaking Law Week 2024:
The 2024 Law Week set new records for attendance, delivering top-tier educational sessions, social events, and family-friendly activities that reinforced the branch’s commitment to community and professional excellence.

7. Continuing Legal Education (CLE):
The administration, through collaborations with organizations such as ICSAN and BRIPAN, expanded opportunities for members to access specialized training and enhance their professional skills.

8. Financial Stewardship:
Under prudent financial management, the branch has seen tremendous growth in its reserves. Investments in treasury bills are expected to yield approximately ₦40 million in early 2025.

9. Secretariat Support:
In recognition of economic challenges, the branch increased the salaries of its secretariat staff, ensuring a motivated workforce to support its operations.

Concluding his address, the Chairman applauded members for embracing the evening’s theme, which reflects not only the vibrancy of Lagos but also the branch’s dedication to the highest standards of professionalism.

“Our achievements over the past year are a testament to what we can accomplish together,” he stated. “With your continued trust and support, we are poised to achieve even greater heights in the years ahead.”
