NBA Human Rights Institute Decries Prolonged Detention of Lawyer Bright Ngene, Urges Solidarity Ahead Appeal Hearing

The Nigerian Bar Association Human Rights Institute (NBA‑HRI) has expressed grave concern over the continued incarceration of legal practitioner, Mr. Bright Emeka Ngene, who remains in custody at the Enugu Correctional Centre due to prolonged delays in the hearing of his appeal.

In a communiqué circulated to members of the Bar and human rights advocates, the 1st Vice President of the NBA and Chairman of the NBA‑HRI, Mr. Sabastine Anyia, disclosed that Mr. Ngene’s appeal has suffered repeated setbacks, with three judges of the Enugu State Judiciary reportedly recusing themselves at critical stages of the proceedings. This development, he noted, has deepened uncertainty and extended the lawyer’s stay in custody.

Mr. Anyia described the situation as distressing, emphasising that the repeated recusals have inflicted severe hardship on the detained lawyer, who continues to endure “agony” while awaiting justice.

The matter has now been scheduled for hearing on January 29, 2026, at the Enugu High Court Complex, raising cautious optimism that the appeal may finally proceed.

In light of these circumstances, the NBA leadership has called on lawyers nationwide—particularly members of the Eastern Bar Forum—to attend the sitting in solidarity. The statement underscored the collective responsibility of the profession, declaring: “Justice for one is justice for all. Today it is Bright Ngene; tomorrow it may be someone else.”

Mr. Anyia confirmed that the Senior Advocates of Nigeria handling the case are fully prepared for the January 29 hearing and assured colleagues of his personal presence in court. He urged members of the legal profession to lend their voices and presence in defence of the rule of law, warning that justice delayed is justice denied.

The NBA Vice President further appealed for unity among lawyers in pursuit of fairness and accountability, expressing confidence that collective action would help secure a just outcome in the matter.
