NBA Disclaims Unauthorised Name Change Services

The attention of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has been drawn to a notice currently in circulation, which purports to offer services for the change of surname by married legal practitioners on the Supreme Court Roll.

The NBA hereby states unequivocally as follows:

1. The update or alteration of particulars on the Roll of Legal Practitioners is a strictly regulated judicial process under the authority and exclusive supervision of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

2. No private individual, office, organisation or firm is authorised by either the Supreme Court or the Nigerian Bar Association to act as intermediary, agent, or service provider for such applications.

3. Any legal practitioner found to be engaging in, facilitating, promoting, or profiting from such unauthorised services shall be subject to strict disciplinary action in accordance with the Rules of Professional Conduct for Legal Practitioners and the disciplinary procedures of the Nigerian Bar Association.

4. Any person—legal practitioner or otherwise—who falsely holds himself or herself out as having authority to render such services, or who misleads members of the Bar or the public in this regard, shall face prosecution and other appropriate legal actions.

Legal practitioners seeking to update their particulars following a change of marital status are strongly advised to adhere strictly to the official procedures of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, or to seek proper guidance through the NBA National Secretariat or their respective NBA Branches.

The Nigerian Bar Association remains resolute in its commitment to protecting the integrity of the profession and the sanctity of official legal processes.
