The Nigerian Bar Association received with deep sorrow and profound anger the shocking news of the brutal assassination of our colleague, Mr. Mark Ofikwu, Secretary of the NBA Otukpo Branch, Benue State. Reports indicate that he was gunned down at the gate of his residence on the night of Wednesday, the 20th of November, 2024 by unknown assailants in what can only be described as a cowardly and despicable act of violence.
This barbaric incident is a grave affront to the sanctity of life and a stark reminder of the deteriorating state of security in our nation. The NBA unequivocally condemns this heinous act and demands immediate action. The Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security agencies must prioritize this case, launch a thorough investigation, and ensure that those responsible for this cold-blooded murder are apprehended and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
The alarming state of insecurity in Nigeria is no longer tolerable. Legal professionals, who dedicate their lives to the pursuit of justice, must not become targets of such senseless violence. We call on the government to take decisive and immediate steps to strengthen the security apparatus of the nation. This incident is a glaring failure that underscores the urgent need for reforms and a more proactive approach to safeguarding the lives and properties of Nigerians.
On behalf of the President of NBA, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, I extend deepest condolences of the NBA to the family of Mr. Ofikwu, the Otukpo Branch of the NBA, and the entire legal community in Benue State. This is an irreplaceable loss, and our hearts are with all who are grieving.
As we await further details about his burial arrangements from his family, we commit ourselves to supporting the Otukpo Branch and ensuring that Mr. Ofikwu’s death is not reduced to a mere statistic. His life, service, and tragic passing demand accountability, and the NBA will remain steadfast in seeking justice.
May the soul of Mr. Mark Ofikwu rest in peace, and may his memory inspire us to continue the fight for a safer and more just society.
Dr. Mobolaji Ojibara
