NANNM Suspends Nationwide Strike After FG Agreement

The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has suspended its nationwide strike, which began on July 29, 2025, following productive negotiations with the Federal Government. The announcement was made by the Minister of Health, Ali Pate, during a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, after a closed-door meeting with the union’s leadership.

Pate disclosed that the suspension was the result of agreements reached between the government and NANNM, though specific details of the accord were not shared. “We have reached a mutual understanding with the leadership of NANNM, leading to the suspension of the strike,” Pate told journalists.

Leaders of the nursing association, however, declined to comment on the matter as they exited the meeting on Friday afternoon, leaving reporters without further insights into the resolution.

The strike, which disrupted services in public health institutions across Nigeria, was initiated after the government failed to address a 15-day ultimatum issued by NANNM on July 14, 2025. The union had demanded action on undisclosed grievances, threatening industrial action if their concerns were not met. The warning strike was originally scheduled to continue until August 5, 2025.

The suspension of the strike is expected to restore normalcy to public healthcare facilities, which had faced significant disruptions over the past four days. Nigerians are hopeful that the agreements reached will address the underlying issues raised by the nurses and midwives, ensuring sustained peace in the healthcare sector.
