The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Ahmed Dangiwa, and the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, conducted a joint inspection of a 753-unit housing estate in Abuja on Wednesday, recently confiscated from former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, as part of an ongoing anti-corruption probe.
The inspection was announced by Salisu Haiba, Director of Press and Public Relations for the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, in a statement released on Wednesday. The sprawling estate, located at Plot 109, Cadastral Zone C09, Lokogoma District, Abuja, spans 150,500 square meters and comprises duplexes and various apartment types. It was formally handed over to the Ministry by the EFCC on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, following a final forfeiture order granted by Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie of the Federal Capital Territory High Court on December 2, 2024.
During the inspection, Minister Dangiwa revealed that the Ministry would immediately commence technical assessments, including structural integrity tests, to prepare the units for sale to Nigerians through the Renewed Hope Portal. “The government of the day is serious about fighting corruption,” Dangiwa stated, emphasizing the Tinubu administration’s commitment to transparency and affordable housing. He praised the EFCC’s efforts, describing the seizure as “one of the most significant in the nation’s history within such a short period.”
EFCC Chairman Olukoyede addressed public doubts about the estate’s existence, noting that earlier aerial images had fueled skepticism. “The essence of this visit is to show that it is real,” he said, underscoring the Commission’s dedication to accountability. He urged Nigerians to trust the EFCC’s anti-corruption drive.
The estate will be integrated into the Federal Government’s National Social Housing Programme, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s agenda to provide affordable housing and promote responsible governance. The recovery of the estate marks a significant milestone in the EFCC’s investigation into alleged financial misconduct during Emefiele’s tenure as CBN Governor from 2014 to 2023.
