FONDA — Local attorney Kris Singh has announced his candidacy for Montgomery County Surrogate Court judge.
He is looking to succeed Judge Guy Tomlinson who will reach the mandatory age of retirement this year.
“Judge Tomlinson has had a remarkable career serving the residents of Montgomery County for decades as our district attorney and as our surrogate court judge,” Singh said in a prepared statement.
Singh believes Tomlinson’s departure from the bench at the end of the year will leave a vacuum of institutional knowledge that he hopes to help fill with his 26 years of experience in private practice and the court system.
For the past 18 years, Singh has served as principal court attorney to several prominent judges in the region, including state Supreme Court Judge Richard Aulisi, Supreme Court Judge Vito Caruso and currently 4th Judicial District Administrative Judge Felix Catena.
In those roles, Singh has conducted legal research, drafted court decisions and provided legal counsel to judges in all courts, including surrogate court. Singh has also been appointed as a hearing officer to preside over contested matters and, as a trained mediator, is assigned to mediate cases in surrogate, family and supreme courts.
Singh’s interest in Surrogate Court was sparked in 1990 during an internship with the Salmon Law Firm in Amsterdam. Upon graduating from Albany Law School, Singh joined local law firm Horigan Horigan & Lombardo, where he honed his skills in surrogate and estate matters and has worked on hundreds of civil litigation cases, gaining experience in multiple areas of law.
With deep roots in the community, Singh believes strongly in community service and holds leadership positions on several local boards. He currently serves as president of the Sarah J. Sanford Home for Elderly Women, vice president of the Montgomery County Bar Association, is a member of the Amsterdam Free Library Board of Trustees and was the former president of the St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation.
Singh feels that sitting on the bench of the Montgomery County Surrogate Court would be another way to give back to the community by putting his skills and experience to use.
“I’m honored that judges have trusted me to provide them with confidential legal advice and I hope to earn the trust and confidence of the residents of Montgomery County by serving as their next Surrogate Court judge,” Singh stated.
Singh and his wife of 27 years, Sunita, live in Amsterdam with their son, Devan, and daughter, Kiran, along with the family’s dog and cat.
