Tobenna heads the Finance, Energy & Major Projects Practice Team of The Law Crest LLP (TLC).
Tobenna is admitted to practice law in Nigeria as well as a solicitor in England & Wales, qualifying in 2000 and 2004 respectively. He holds an LLB from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and an LLM in corporate finance law from the University of Westminster.
Tobenna’s trajectory in the legal profession includes an eight year stint in the public sector in the UK, where, amongst others, he held the position of Senior Solicitor- Regeneration and Legal Adviser of the Barnet Urban Regeneration Board. In that capacity he was the lead advisor on some of the most significant project finance and infrastructure development related projects in Europe including the £4 billion Brent Cross Cricklewood regeneration scheme, the Graham Park Regeneration Scheme, the Stonegrove Regeneration Scheme and the Mill Hill East Regeneration Scheme.
Tobenna has also advised on several significant construction and real estate development projects in the public and private sectors, including the development of the N10billiom Naira Post Square under a JV between NIPOST and a private developer.
Tobenna’s other areas of practice are energy and natural resources; corporate finance; project finance; and mergers and acquisitions and has been involved in most of TLC’s energy and natural resources transactions. Recent matters in this area include advising the borrower in a United States $450 million financing in respect of a participating interest in an oil mining lease, and advising the acquirer in the acquisition of a major oil servicing company as part of an offshore takeover of the parent company. He led the team that advised the acquirer in a $600 million debt restructuring and acquisition for a major oil and gas company in Nigeria. Tobenna recently led the team that acted as Nigerian counsel to an Africa-focused oil and gas exploration development, production and exploration company incorporated in the United Kingdom and its subsidiary incorporated under the laws of Dubai International Financial Centre on the provision of up to $600 million for the exploration, development, production and sale of crude oil from OML 65 owned by the Nigerian Exploration and Production Limited (Formerly Nigerian Petroleum Development Company Limited).
He is recognized in many global legal directories and led the team at TLC that won the IFLR 1000 ‘Restructuring Deal of the Year 2020 for Sub Saharan Africa.Tobenna is a member of the Nigerian Bar Association and was a member of its National Executive Council for 6 years, he is also a member of the Law Society of England and Wales, and the International Bar Association. He has held very notable positions in the Nigerian Bar Association and was, until very recently, the Chairman of the Board of the NBA-ICLE. He was a two term member of the Executive Committee of the NBA Lagos Branch and Chairman of the NBA Lagos Branch Continuing Legal Education Committee for 4 years. He sits on the board of several companies and was a member of the National Judicial Council between 2022 and 2024. He also served in the Enugu State Transition Committee in 2023.
