Chiderah Ike-Okonkwo began her career as a legal practitioner in the private sector and now works as a data protection and privacy specialist at the Data Protection regulator in Nigeria where she heads the Research, Development and Innovations Department.
Her interest in data protection and privacy began in 2018 while she was studying for her master’s degree in Compliance and Cross-Cultural Business Practices at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland. The General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) had just come into force and this informed her decision to carve out a niche in Privacy and Data Protection.
She has had the privilege of working on the draft Nigeria Data Protection Bill 2023, serving as a member of the Strategic Road Map Action Plan Committee of the Nigeria Data Protection Bureau (NDPB), and speaking at international and national events on data protection, privacy, and digitization. She offers capacity development and compliance advisory for data controllers and processors of major significance as well as SMEs and startups. Considering that data protection and privacy are still in their infancy in Nigeria, she is enthusiastic about any opportunity to create awareness, build capacity and contribute meaningfully to the ecosystem
