Lawmakers Approve Victims’ Rights Bill

August 14, 2024, marks a bittersweet milestone for the Muhammed family as they commemorate the 31st anniversary of the tragic assassination of Zakari Murtala Muhammed, son of the late Head of State, Murtala Mohammed.

While remembering the pain of their loss, the family also celebrates a significant triumph in their decades-long fight for victims’ rights in Nigeria.

The National Assembly’s approval of the Victims’ Rights Bill is a major achievement, bringing hope to families of victims of crime across the country.

The bill’s passage is a testament to the Muhammed family’s unwavering dedication to ensuring that victims’ rights are protected and justice is served.

Zakari’s tragic shooting on August 13, 1993, and his subsequent death the next day, exposed the flaws in Nigeria’s justice system. Despite identifying suspects, the case remains unresolved due to prosecution failures.

However, the legislative victory marks a turning point, setting a precedent for future cases and paving the way for a more compassionate and effective justice system in Nigeria.
